Irish Data Protection Authority suspends Meta's EU-US transfers, imposes €1.2 billion GDPR fine

The Data Protection Commission - the Irish data protection authority - imposed an administrative fine of 1.2 billion EUR on Meta Platforms Ireland (formerly known as Facebook Ireland) for the infringement of the rules on international personal data transfers under the General Data Protection Regulation. The Irish DPA has further ordered Meta to bring its processing operations into compliance with these GDPR rules by "ceasing the unlawful processing, including storage, in the US of personal data of EEA users transferred in violation of the GDPR". Finally, the DPA ordered Meta to suspend any further transfers of personal data from the European Union to the United States.
