The 2019 Hague Judgments Convention to enter into force in September 2023

On 29 August 2022, the European Union deposited its instrument of accession to the Convention of 2 July 2019 on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments in Civil or Commercial Matters (the “Hague Judgments Convention”). Shortly after, Ukraine deposited its instrument of ratification. The effect of these steps is that the Hague Judgments Convention will enter into force on 1 September 2023 and will apply between EU Member States (other than Denmark) and Ukraine in relation to the recognition and enforcement of judgments arising out of proceedings commenced after that date.
