Michel Struys practises EU and competition law.

Michel Struys has a wealth of experience advising on all aspects of EU competition law, including merger control, cartels, abuse of dominance and state aid.

He has assisted multinational companies in a number of landmark EU Commission proceedings raising novel issues, such as the application of Article 102 TFEU to the licensing of standard essential patents in Samsung, price signalling in the Container Shipping case, and tax optimisation in McDonald's successful challenge to the EU Commission’s recent state aid investigation.

Michel also has extensive litigation experience before the European Courts.

Michel Struys was previously a partner in the Competition and EU law practice of the Brussels and Paris offices of Allen & Overy. He started his career at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York City before serving in the Court of Justice of the European Union as a Law Clerk (“référendaire”). He then joined Allen & Overy’s London office, where he went on to co-head its Global Competition practice.

Michel Struys has received well-earned recognition for his work in the area of EU and competition law. At the request of the European Commission, Michel has been a Member of the International Competition Network (ICN) since 2012. Michel has received two awards from Global Awards Corporate LiveWire: the first, in 2015, for Competition and Antitrust in France, and the second, in 2017, for Excellence in Merger Control Services. Also in 2017, Legal 500 noted that Michel Struys “provides well-balanced views and is a warrior who will not lose a fight for his clients” and about whom interviewees say: “he is very practically minded and extremely knowledgeable”. In 2015, Michel’s work was recognised by the Global Competition Review (GCR) award for EU Behavioural Matter of the Year, whilst in 2017, his work was nominated for two GCR awards: European Litigation of the Year and European Behavioural Matter of the Year.
