Van Bael & Bellis (“VBB”) has signed the Green Pledge, an initiative led by the international arbitrator Lucy Greenwood and the Campaign for Greener Arbitrations (“CGA”).
The Green Pledge initiative is intended to reduce the carbon footprint of the arbitration community. By signing the Green Pledge, signatories commit to take various steps to reduce their carbon footprint in the context of their arbitration practice.
The Green Pledge is promoted by the CGA through its steering committee and regional sub-committees, which are made up of a diverse group of key stakeholders, including practitioners, arbitrators and arbitration service providers, in the international arbitration community. Helin Laufer, Associate in the International Arbitration group of VBB, co-heads the Europe Sub-Committee, which comprises over 50 representatives from more than 30 jurisdictions in Europe.
The CGA has also published six protocols (the “Green Protocols”) aiming to assist stakeholders in the international arbitration community with the implementation of the Green Pledge and achieving environmental sustainability in arbitration more broadly. The Green Protocols consider all aspects of international arbitration, including the roles played by arbitrators, counsel, institutions and vendors, and are available in Arabic, English, French, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. The Green Protocols can be downloaded here: https://www.greenerarbitrations.com/green-protocols.
