On 25 February 2021, Van Bael & Bellis Chairman Jean-François Bellis participated in a panel discussion on "National champions and merger control during COVID-19" in a series of webinars: "Protectionism and nationalism in the post-COVID World" organised by the European University Institute. The webinar addressed the conflict between industrial policy and merger control in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak. It analysed recent European Commission merger control decisions and examined whether the European Commission is "softening" its traditional approach to merger control which could, ultimately, benefit "European champions".

The panel was moderated by Maciej Bernatt, University of Warsaw. The other panellists were Harald Kahlenberg, CMS, and Angela Huyue Zhang, University of Hong Kong.
