The European Commission launched today a public consultation on health and care in the Digital Single Market. The consultation runs until 12 October 2017 and can be accessed through the following link.

The consultation will create the basis for the Commission’s communication on the subject which is scheduled to be published at the end of 2017.

The consultation seeks views on three major subjects:

  • Access for patients to electronic health records and prescriptions as well as the possibility of sharing these documents across borders.

  • Access for health care professionals to data sets across borders in order to advance: (i) research; (ii) disease prevention; and (iii) personalised health and care. This aspect of the Commission’s strategy will initially focus on three specific areas: (i) rare diseases; (ii) prediction models for epidemics; and (iii) pharmacovigilance.

  • Promoting the uptake of digital tools under the banners of citizen empowerment and person-centered care.
