On 26 September 2016, Van Bael & Bellis was recognised at the 2016 American Lawyer (ALM) Global Legal Awards dinner in New York for its work in the Air Cargo case before the EU General Court which won the ALM Global Dispute of the Year: International Litigation award.

The case concerned an alleged cartel with respect to surcharges applied by air carriers for the transport of goods by air. In 2010, the Commission imposed fines totalling EUR 799 million on 11 airlines, including Japan Airlines which was fined EUR 37.5 million. The Commission’s decision was appealed before the EU General Court which annulled the fine imposed on Japan Airlines.

Japan Airlines was represented before the EU General Court by Van Bael & Bellis partners Jean-François Bellis, Kris Van Hove and Richard Burton.

The American Lawyer Global Legal Awards aim to recognize and honour the best cross-border legal work of the year.
