Jean-François Bellis speaks on excessive pricing of medical products during the COVID crisis

On 3 July 2020, Jean-François Bellis participated as a speaker in a webinar organised by the European University Institute (EUI) aimed at discussing cases of excessive prices during the COVID crisis, in particular in relation to a number of medical products, and the role of competition policy to this regard. Jean-François specifically addressed the issue of unfair pricing and in particular the application of what has become to be known as the United Brands test. The panel was moderated by Professor Marco Botta, EUI Chairman. The other speakers were Wolf Sauter, Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets, and  Valérie Meunier, Compass Lexecon Paris.

    Van Bael & Bellis partner Kris Van Hove has authored an article on “Revising the rulebook for competition law in digital markets in Europe” published in the latest edition of Competition Policy International. Over the past few years, a flurry of expert reports and policy documents has issued from the European Commission, Member States and the UK on this topic. The article presents the commonalities in those reports and policy documents in terms of perceived competition issues and offered solutions and subjects the solutions to a critical analysis from the perspectives of necessity and proportionality.
