Switzerland does not have a formal FDI screening mechanism in place. In 2018, the Swiss Federal Council commissioned a study by the Swiss Institute of Comparative Law on FDI screening mechanisms applicable in other industrialised countries. It assessed the need to introduce an FDI screening mechanism in Switzerland.

On 13 February 2019, the Swiss Federal Council published a report, confirming that the FDI screening in Switzerland is not necessary. However, the Swiss Federal Council recognised potential risks associated with FDI and will be monitoring the situation. The report, and therefore also the decision of the Swiss Federal Council, may be amended if justified based on new information within the next four years.
