Overview

Ugur Can Hekim focuses on all aspects of EU and international trade law, with a particular emphasis on WTO law and trade defence investigations across multiple jurisdictions (including Turkey and the EU). Ugur advises governments in their WTO disputes and represents companies and governments in safeguard, anti-dumping or anti-subsidy investigations. He has also assisted clients in several customs law, competition law and aviation law matters.  

Prior to joining Van Bael & Bellis, Ugur gained experience at leading law firms in Istanbul specialising in litigation, commercial law, data protection law and intellectual property law.

    Uğur Hekim speaks at University of Giessen

    Article On 14th December 2022, VBB Associate Uğur Hekim was invited by the Fachbereich Rechtswissenschaft at the Justus-Liebig Universitat Gießen, Germany, as a guest lecturer. His topic was Establishing and Keeping Peace through Foreign Trade and Economic Policies? An analysis of the role of Türkiye. He spoke about foreign trade and economic policies of Türkiye as a way to establishing and keeping peace, with a particular focus on the on-going Ukraine-Russia conflict.     Uğur Can Hekim moderates panel on “Redirecting the World Trade Organization” at the Horasis Global Meeting virtual event 2021

    Van Bael & Bellis lawyer Ugur Can Hekim moderated a panel titled “Redirecting the World Trade Organization” on 8 June 2021 at the Horasis Global Meeting – one of the foremost annual meetings of the world’s leading decision makers from business, government and civil society. The topics under discussion were current challenges in the multilateral trading system, expectations for the new DG’s tenure, the WTO's role in global health, environment and sustainable development in the midst of global crises as well as its position in the global interinstitutional order. The panel speakers were: Jonathan Fried, former Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Canada to the WTO, former personal representative of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to the G20, Senior Associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group, USA; Ricardo Meléndez-Ortiz, former Director of the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD - Geneva), co-founder and former General Director, Fundación Futuro Latinoamericano (FFLA – Quito), permanent Colombian Delegate and negotiator for GATT/WTO, former Principal Adviser to the Colombian Minister of Economic Development and Chief of Administration at the office of the President of Colombia, and Strategic Adviser at Latin Trade Group, USA; and Kola Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Group, a pan-Africanist entrepreneur who promotes regional integration and trade among the states of African states.     Ugur Can Hekim speaks at the Horasis Global Meeting 2019

    Van Bael & Bellis lawyer Ugur Can Hekim spoke on 8 April 2019 as a member of a panel at the Horasis Global Meeting in Cascais, Portugal. The topic under discussion was the future ideal regimes of regional trade groupings and their current impact on multilateral trade liberalisation in the era of globalisation. Other speakers on the panel were Mr. Mats Hellström, Sweden’s former Minister for Foreign Trade; Parvis Hanson, President of Manor Group; Michele Orzan, President of European Chamber; Pascal Anosike, Director of the Centre for African Entrepreneurship. The panel was moderated by Mr. Stiphan Beher, CEO of SpaceTek and the former Trade Advisor of Kyrgyz Republic. Horasis events bring together influential groups of business leaders to discuss collaborative approaches to addressing sustainable growth. The meetings are the foremost annual gatherings of business leaders from emerging markets and their global counterparts.
